| MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small endogeneous non-coding RNAs of about 22nt length. These short RNAs regulate the expression of mRNAs by hybridizing with their 3'-UTRs or by translational repression. They have been shown to take crucial roles in many biological processes. Many of the current studies are focused over how mature miRNAs regulate mRNAs, even though there is very limited knowledge about their transcriptional loci. | RNA-seq technology facilitates the study of gene expression at the level of individual exons and transcripts. Moreover, RNA-seq enables unbiased comparative analysis of expression levels across species. Such analyses typically start by mapping sequenced reads to the appropriate reference genome before comparing expression levels across species. However, this comparison requires prior knowledge of orthology at the exon level. With this in mind, I constructed a database of orthologous exons across three primate species (human, chimpanzee, and rhesus macaque). | This paper estimates the effects of media coverage of organic food production on food purchases. Information from several data sources links national and local newspaper coverage to fluid milk purchases. An analysis of weekly store-level scanner data in a differences-in-differences approach results in a 5% increase in organic milk sales relative to conventional milk sales. Increases in intensity of news coverage increase this relative difference in sales. Differentiating effects by media context further suggests that product category specific coverage increases sales more than general coverage. Critical coverage does not result in significant effects on organic milk sales. |

| The availability of a useful tool for simple and timely detection of the most important virulent varieties of Escherichia coli is indispensable. To this end, bacterial DNA pools which had previously been categorized were obtained from isolated colonies as well as selected in terms of utilized phenotype; the pools were assessed by two PCR Multiplex for the detection of virulent E. coli eaeA, bfpA, stx1, stx2, ipaH, ST, LT, and aatA genes, with the 16S gene used as DNA control. The system was validated with 66 fecal samples and 44 wastewater samples. At least one positive isolate was detected by a virulent gene among the 20 that were screened. | Este trabalho parte de um problema do presente, o alto consumo de bens materiais e seus desperdícios nas organizações públicas e privadas, e se propõe a oferecer diretrizes em educação ambiental para administrar e diminuir a produção de resíduos sólidos comuns, como papel, plástico, vidro e metal. Na Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Embrapa), no Estado do Amapá, desenvolve-se um programa de gestão ambiental, cuja ênfase no gerenciamento desses resíduos está em fase de implementação, com a construção de uma área para processamento do lixo produzido diariamente. | Forest management to a large extent determines the possible services that the forest can provide. Different objectives in forest management determine the rotation length and valuation of different stages in forest succession. We present a method of mapping potential forest management at 1-km resolution to inform policy, land use modeling, and forest resource projections. The presented method calculates the suitability of a location to different forest management alternatives based on biotic, abiotic, socioeconomic, and political factors. | The assessment of the impacts of growing genetically modified (GM) crops remains a major political and scientific challenge in Europe. Concerns have been raised by the evidence of adverse and unexpected environmental effects and differing opinions on the outcomes of environmental risk assessments (ERA). The current regulatory system is hampered by insufficiently developed methods for GM crop safety testing and introduction studies.
